The Holy Spirit is Given to His Servant

Here are the Bible verses that show to whom the Spirit of YHWH was given. In these passages, we also see the characteristics of this Spirit:

Isaiah 11:2

The spirit of the LORD will rest on him. The spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD

He will delight in obeying the Lord, He will not judge by appearance nor make a decision based on hearsay. He will give justice for the poor, and make fair decisions for the exploited.  The earth will shake at the force of His word, and one breath from his mouth will destroy the wicked. He will wear righteousness like a belt and truth like an undergarment.

Isaiah 42

Here is my servant, whom I support, my chosen one, in whom I take pleasure. I have put my SPIRIT on him. He will bring justice to the Gentiles. He will not cry or shout. No one will hear his voice in the streets. He will not snap off a broken reed or snuff out a smoldering wick. He will bring forth justice according to truth; he will not weaken or be crushed until he has established justice on the earth, and the coastlands will wait for his Law.

The last few phrases were referring to His servant, however, YHWH also bestows His Spirit and blessings on this servant’s descendants:

Isaiah 44

For I will pour my SPIRIT on your descendants, my blessing on your offspring. They will spring up among the grass like willows on the riverbanks. One will say, “I belong to Yahweh”, another will be called by the name of Jacob. Yet another will write that he belongs to the Lord, and adopt the surname Israel.

It is obvious that He is talking about persons here, who can talk, and not nations or continents. Eventually, however, God also gives His Spirit to the people:

Ezekiel 37: 13-14 Valley of Dry Bones

“Then you will know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves and caused you to come up out of your graves, My people. I will put My Spirit within you and you will come to life, and I will place you on your own land. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have spoken and done it,” declares the LORD.

Here, the Spirit of the Lord is able to turn the valley of dry bones into living beings. He promises that to His people, Israel. After Israel defiles God by worshipping idols, He promises that for His own name, He will make Israel Holy again, and clean it:

Ezekiel 36:26

26 Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. You will live in the land that I gave to your forefathers; so you will be My people, and I will be your God.

Here we see that the Spirit of God causes obedience to His mitzvot. Also, it will come when His people are living in a land that is safe and from their forefathers This spirit is one and the same as the one mentioned below, a reiteration of the promise of YHWH.

Ezekiel 11:19-21

“And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, 20that they may walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances and do them. Then they will be My people, and I shall be their God. 21”

After the destruction of Gog, and the feast of Royal flesh on Mount Israel, God says:

Ezekiel 39:29

I will not hide My face from them any longer, for I will have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel,” declares the Lord GOD.

It is only after Israel has identified their God, and after God hides His face from them that the Spirit of God is given to the people. That is when this will happen:

Joel 2

Thus you will know that I am in the midst of Israel, And that I am the LORD your God, And there is no other; And My people will never be put to shame. 28“It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spiriton all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your youngmen will see visions. 29“Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days

The Spirit of God comes with the gifts of prophecy and visions. This will be the time that the Spirit of God will be for everyone.
